SCYA is again proud to be the sponsor of the 93rd annual running of the Midwinter Regatta. This year it will be held over the weekends of February 4 & 5 and February 25 & 26. Individual clubs may host their regatta on different dates to meet their racing schedule, Make sure to register early and check their website.
This event is currently held at over 25 venues throughout the area served by SCYA. In the past host venues included clubs from as far north as Morrow Bay, South to Ensenada MX, inland to Pheonix and Lake Havasu City AZ and most areas in between. If a fun regatta with lots of history is something you are interested in you need to register.
Some of the best known yachtsmen including Clifford Mallory, John Alden Herbert Stone, Humphrey Bogart, John Bertrand and Jim Kilroy have used this regatta as a training ground to get their boats and crew ready for the sailing season. You too can join this elite group of sailors by taking part.
The classes hosted during this regatta have evolved over the years during the 1930’s the Star Class had a huge following and in 1946 the Naples Sabot class was introduced. As Fiberglass became popular the Laser Class had a great showing. The Cal 40s made their debut in 1964, classic yachts like Kialoa II and Newsboy also made regular appearances. SCYA has always tried to meet the needs and wants of our local sailors and offered venues and classes to meet our changing environment. We currently have large junior regattas in Marina del Rey and Newport Beach. One Design races are held in the Long Beach Area, in Newport and San Diego. Remote control boat racing has caught on fire over the years and Long Beach, New Port Beach, San Diego and Lake Arrowhead all host these class’s. Of course PHRF classes in both the Spinnaker and Cruising classes can be found up and down the coast. If you want to race it our race committee will try to find a venue that meets your needs.
